A few weeks before Living Colour released their latest album The Chair in the Doorway (Megaforce Records), the band performed at an invite-only showcase in Brooklyn. I was hanging with my homie Lisa Cortes, one of the producers of the highly anticipated film Precious, and we were both excited.
As arty graphics rotated on a screen in the background, Living Colour transformed from middle-aged men into cocoa-hued children of the rock revolution, exorcising their demons surrounding racism, politics,…

Ok so I started out the day trying to see the the MJ memorial at 10:00 but I forgot that the procession started in California time and I was in new York...-.-...at the time even the private service didn't even start. Around 1:00 (in New York) the public memorial started and th…

Michael Jackson was probably one of the most controversial figures in history, from turning white to touching little kids private parts or covering his children's faces with masks and scarves. However, there is no question that he was a great musician and that his songs are legendary. One of my favorite memories of him was when he was doing one of his concerts and because the dude had had a million nose jobs, one of his noses fell off on the stage during his performance. I was watching the conce…

Icons pass and we’re left speechless. Their passing hits home particularly hard when they’re not much older than we are. Things become existential real quick.
Perhaps it is b

Watching the BET Awards made me realize a couple of things last night. For one, Jamie Foxx did his best being the sharpest nail in the nail box. In all of his tributes to the late and great king of pop Jamie Foxx still tried to be as positive as possible, even with all of the dropped cues (the entire show), weird skits (Baby Boy skit), shameless plugs (Alicia Keys how dare you) and bad cursing habits (shout out to Lil Wanye and The O'Jays) the show had within the “jam-packed” award show.
Now th…

Showmanship!
Imagine being the victim of a borderline sociopath, trying to control you through beatings, insults and humiliation. Think of the stinging insults coming from your own father. He’s ugly…his nose is too big. ADOLESENCE! And the pressure to get it right or get an ass-whippin’. He had to deal with pressures of the spotlight…coming out of the civil rights movement…struggling with your identity when so many signals from the world and from your own people (THE MOST PAINFUL) say that you…

I've never been the sentimental type, but this man right here opened up a world of mental, creative & spiritual possibilities before me as a young kid & I gotta give thanks where thanks is due. People like Michael Jackson, from Gary, Indiana come along once in a blue moon, to shine their strange light upon the world.. and we are all the more shaded, hidden from ourselves, less rich when they leave. That's all I have to say.... E xxx

Today Afro-punk and the world has lost one of its truest pioneers in music "Michael Jackson"! Michael was a legend in every sense of the word. If it wasn't for artist such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Bad Brains and In Living Color a lot of us wouldn't be in the music! It was their obscurity that lead to the birth of new musical talents we see today! So many people may think Michael was not a part of Afro-punk! Well you are wrong! Afro-punk is a movement filled with people who think…

Friends,
I drive an American car. It's a Chrysler. That's not an endorsement. It's more like a cry for pity. And now for a decades-old story, retold ad infinitum by tens of millions of Americans, a third of whom have had to desert their country to simply find a damn way to get to work in something that won't break down:
My Chrysler is fou…

"Friends,
Let me cut to the chase. The biggest robbery in the history of this country is taking place as you read this. Though no guns are being used, 300 million hostages are being taken. Make no mistake about it: After stealing a half trillion dollars to line the pockets of their war-profiteering backers for the past five years, after lining the pockets of their fellow oilmen to the tune of over a hundred billion dollars in just the last two years, Bush and his cronies -- who must soon vacate…
