My personal feminist quotable for the week

Courtesy of Muslimah Media Watch, re: media discussion of Muslim women's clothing:

[E]ven for this segment of the population for whom clothing is something imposed on them, should what they wear really be our biggest concern? My impression is that if a woman is in a situation where she truly does not have any say in what she wears, chances are she is probably facing greater abuse (or threats thereof) than the cloth that she is wearing onContinue

Thing that makes me go hmm - racial drag

One of the things I got addicted to while on study abroad (besides street noodles with Sichuan hot sauce at 3 AM and being the tallest person on the subway) was fashion magazines. I don't really buy them here anymore, but I'd flip through my roommate's all the time. I justified it by claiming to be practicing my Chinese, but really I was interested in seeing how fashion was presented in an Asian context. That, and I like clothes. (What, I have to be deep all the time? LOL)

The local versions of… Continue

Art shows during Afropunk

This post is just as much for me as it is for anyone reading who's gonna be around for the Festival. It's a no-shit premise that there's plenty to do in New York, so I'm not going to rehash anything that you could get from a tourist website. If you're into checking out galleries, here are a couple exhibits that'll be going on that merit a look while you're in the area.

(Full disclosure: I know fuck all about art, except that I like certain stuff and don't like other stuff. Take that as a discla… Continue

"How To Write About Africa" by Binyavanga Wainaina

I love this essay because it makes satiric mention of all the bullshit literary devices used to exotify Africa and Africans. I think this is true in a lot of literary/media characterizations of people of color in general - they're not so much real people as they are a jumbling of stereotypes. Fortunately, there are young authors like Uwem Akpan and… Continue

Profile Information

Name
Julia B.
About Me
Yardie turned New Jersey suburbanite turned slam poet turned fledgling activist turned idealistic education-minded dork running on a hamster wheel through her early late-twenties.

I call four cities on two continents (and one small Caribbean island) home, because they're where I've hung my heart, and things are just getting started.

And I still wanna be Shug Avery when I grow up. With her fast ass.
You can be my friend if...
you want to write together. Or cook together. Or share your music with me. Or wild out at the bookstore/comic store/thrift store. Bring a compass and some jokes.
Occupation:
I rule the school. Or subvert the ivory tower by working for it (OK, not really... I wish). Basically, I make lost college students a little less lost. And I type shit.
Favorite bands:
To save time, we'll go by genres instead of artists. Capisce?

Afrobeat * new jack swing * hip hop for nerds who dance good and talk politics * really old American pop music (20s, 30s, 40s) * classic Jamaican music (mento, ska, rocksteady) * anti-folk * boleros * Britpop * bossa nova * new wave/new romantic * dancehall * glam punk * blues * post-punk * deep house * trip hop * jazz * classic rock * shidaiqu * filmi music * old school merengue * riot grrrl * romantic era classical composers (I'm particular like that) * blues * non-Disney showtunes
Favorite movies:
Stuff by Wong Kar-Wai, Deepa Mehta, Alfred Hitchcock, John Waters, Federico Fellini, Jean-Luc Godard, Hayao Miyazaki, Jiang Wen and Franco Zeffirelli. A couple Spike Lee joints as well (*love* Crooklyn), but I fucking hate those damn overused dolly shots. Also, I'm not above watching badly dubbed kung-fu and crappy-funny sci-fi.

I like watching flicks with the following people in them: Catherine Deneuve, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Pam Grier, Marilyn Monroe, Sidney Poitier, Paul Robeson, Liz Taylor, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Prince.

And can't nothing beat Goodfellas.
Favorite books:
Sarah Vowell joints, Alice Walker's anything, Rupaul's autobio, whatever Jose Luis Borges and Gabriel Garcia Marquez have to tell me, the Weetzie Bat series, White Teeth, Half-Life, Fun Home, Rent Girl (and other Michelle Tea joints), the next anthology or non-fiction thing I take out of the library.
Favorite Magazines:
Bitch, BUST, Venus, Mental Floss, National Geographic, Monocle, Harper's, Wired, Fader, Trace... plus bullshit fashion magazines when I am getting my nails did
Favorite TV shows:
My favorites are all canceled. Bleh. Yay for TV on the Internet.

Freaks and Geeks, Futurama, Tales of the Crypt, original Twilight Zone, Mr. Show, The State, Arrested Development, Duckman, The Critic, A Different World, Star Trek (TNG, DS9 but my heart wasn't in it, a little of the original), Sliders, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾, really awful 90s novelas (AKA everything Thalia was in).
Relationship status:
zestfully clean
Orientation:
Unsure
Zodiac Sign
Virgo
Kids?:
For the time being, my inner child's enough work to raise, thanks.
Smoke/Drink?
no/yes
Band Question - Record label:
Major

Hey thanks for the add. White Teeth? I saw the BBC movie, if i'm thinking of the same series. That was a great movie.

I'm up for [Or share your music with me. Or wild out at the bookstore/comic store/thrift store]. I'm interested to see what you have that I don't. I'm sure it'll keep me busy for the next few months.

when I think of you I think about what if Marilyn Monroe mated with Nina Simone who then gave birth to a soft cover of "The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" on top of a muxtape.
