Name
El Machetero
About Me
i been lots of different things in my time, and i intend to be many more things in the time that's left......OG punk rocker, cratedigger, DJ, underground MC/spoken word artist, aspiring revolutionary, spiritual searcher, street philosopher, creative educator, hustler, working man, lover, fighter, one who tends to learn the hard way in endless pursuit of the right way. For the most part, it's been fun so far.......
You can be my friend if...
you don't allow yourself to be resigned to the bullshit and negativity that surrounds us or that's within us, and if you aspire to Love self and life, and overstand that we are born into heaven but taught to live in hell, and know this temporary state of affairs still has hopes of being balanced and you're serious and down for Building together to do this.
Website :
http://www.myspace.com/elmacheteromusic
Occupation:
Got a few of those..........community/social worker, independent artist, events planner/promoter, freelance writer, DJ, creative consultant, spanish voiceovers, physical labourer (trash removal, construction site clean-up, demolition, landscaping, moving and storage.)
Favorite bands:
Too many to name.....but basically, i'm strictly into classicks.....no watered down commercial shit.....REAL Hip-Hop, dusty old soul music, raw dirty funk, salsa and cumbia from the streets, roots rockers reggae and dancehall, ruff disco, Afrobeat, metaphysical jazz, classick old school hardcore punk, OG stoner rock, freestyle (yes, freestyle...the "don't break my heart" kinda stuff) and a whole lot of other shit you'd probably be shocked to find out i'm into, unless of course, you're into it too.
Favorite movies:
Just about anything from Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean, gritty 70s urban dramas, horror flicks, comedy that's actually funny, political documentaries, GOOD gangster flicks, anything that has a good story and has strong Black and Brown protagonists at the front and center.
Favorite books:
Everything from autobiographies to ghetto crime novels to deep esoteric science and wisdom to intelligent fiction to suppressed history to political sci-fi......i tend to read A LOT.
Favorite TV shows:
i don't fuck with the telly.
Relationship status:
Transitional
Orientation:
Straight
Zodiac Sign
Taurus
Kids?:
None yet
Smoke/Drink?
yes/yes
Band Question - Genre:
Sophistigriticated soulful unflattering early punk-influenced Hip-Hop that is equally smooth and grimey, personal and political.
Band Question -Band Members:
Right now, i'm my own everything......but i have many close musical peers who are down to do shit. It's presently a question of who has the time, who works well with who, who's down to work with me even though there's no money to play with yet, at the same time as i'm working to write better songs and arrangements, and become as self-sufficient as possible as an artist.
Band Question - Sounds like:
My newer material is sort of a cross between War, the Clash, Boogie Down Productions, Bilal and Gnarls Barkley, with a bit of Richie Havens and Bill Withers thrown in for good measure.

But i have other material that sounds more like Freestyle Fellowship/Organized Konfusion/RZA, other material that sounds more like Jose Feliciano or Silvio Rodriguez, and other material that sounds more like early Black Flag.
Band Question - Musical Influences:
Rass Kass, Organized Konfusion, Last Poets, Freestyle Fellowship, Saul Wlliams, Immortal Technique, Jean Grae, Miguel Pinero, Scarface, Geto Boys, Vast Aire, RZA, Self Jupiter, Aceyalone, Mikah 9, Mutabaruka, Big L, Pharoahe Monch, dead prez, MF Doom, Ghostface Killah, Lord Finesse, Slaughter Rico, Ultramagnetic MCs, A.G., Paris, Audio Two, Mobb Deep, Sister Souljah, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Slick Rick, Kool G Rap, Beatnuts, Killah Priest, De La Soul, OutKast, MF Grimm, Alkaholiks, 3rd Bass, Brother D, Murs, Cee Lo Green, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Too $hort, Keith Murray, Aloe Blacc, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Clipse, Divine Styler, O.C., Del the Funkee Homosapien, Percee P, Hezekiah, Cypress Hill, Hector Lavoe, Nina Simone, Peter Tosh, Ruben Blades, Melvin Van Peebles, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Bill Withers, Gil Scott-Heron, Joan Armatrading, E-40, the Clash, Sizzla, M.I.A., Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Joe Bataan, Juan Luis Guerra, Curtis Mayfield, Jose Feliciano, AZ, Gang Starr, Nas, Ice Cube, Eric B. and Rakim, Public Enemy, Delinquent Habits, Mike Ladd, Graph Nobel, A Tribe Called Quest, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Don Blackman, Orange 9MM, Genius GZA, Marvin Gaye, David Axelrod, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Negative Approach, Void, Crucifix, Ataque Frontal, Filth, G.I.S.M., Wretched, Raw Power, Battalion of Saints, Rudimentary Peni, Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, Love, Brother Ali, R.A. the Rugged Man, Black Moon, Onyx, Masta Killa, Bumpy Knuckles, Three 6 Mafia, Hubert Selby Jr., Dizzee Rascal, Lil' Scrappy, M.O.P., Saigon, Grandmaster Melle Mel, KRS 1, Eric Burdon, Digable Planets, the Fugees, Bahamadia, Pharcyde, Jayne Cortez, Black Sabbath, Bettye LaVette, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Exuma, Simon and Garfunkel, Diamond D, Poor Righteous Teachers, Madlib, J-Dilla, and YOU.
