Afro-punk

So I'm from/I live in Texas. But during the school year I live in DC. When I'm home, my hair does really well after i wash it as far as detangling goes. It doesn't feel dry or crunchy but rather soft to the touch. Coming back to DC, I knew the water would be different but it just doesn't agree at all. When I'm detangling, I feel like I'm putting up too much of a struggle and it really hurts. The DC water does have more lead in it and not only does it leave my hair dry but my body as well. I know for people that have perms, since they wash there hair once every 1-2 weeks, they just buy distilled water to wash their hair with. But that's a little much for me.

How do I combat this?!

Whoa, I'd never thought about that.

You might have to buy some distilled water or make your own and do it like a rinse, maybe put some essential oils in there. Either that or a filter to take the lead out which may be expensive.

Wash your hair less or maybe detangle before you get in the shower and before you wash your hair?

I would invest in a faucet filter and one of those shampoo-hose hookups. Make sure to replace the filter cartridge often enough. Do some extra moisturizing, too... hot oil treatments are always good. For skin care, I recommend Kirk's Coco Castile Soap, http://www.kirksnatural.com/ . Awesome for fighting the effects of hard/heavily mineralized water. They also make body wash & shampoo, I haven't tried those but I'm sure they're just as good as the original bar soap!
