Hey LA AfroPunks! Divisible is playing tomorrow night at the Echo, with a band Pollyn who is also multi-ethnic. It's only $5 and should be a great night. I didn't get to see Saul (we were playing in Santa Barbara that night) but I would love to meet some of you and hear about the experience first hand.

The great Blackbyrd McKnight performs live at the Mint in LA on Saturday November 28. For most true funkateers, he requires no introduction, but for those who don't know, DeWayne "Blackbyrd" McKnight is an American guitarist. He was a member of The Headhunters, a jazz-funk fusion band from 1975 through 1978 and Parliament-Funkadelic from 1978 though 2008. He served briefly as guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers after the death of Hillel Slovak. He also played briefly with Miles Davis in 1986. (from Wikipedia) He was also a major part of the Long Beach Funk Fest, performing with both Danny Bedrosian and Secret Army, as well as Dawn Silva. Come on out and support the funk for this rare show!

LA's club underground scene is very tribal. Bookings are based on the "pay-to-play" philosophy and whoever brings the biggest crowd gets top billing under the headliner. Moreover, unless you got a bit national hit, the crowd is basically there to see that band. So, even if your band has the greater notoriety or is a legacy band, if the opening acts bring the crowd, then the room will shrink when these opening bands pack it up and split. I've seen a lot of energy, literally, go out of the room.

A neat little trick to play is put the headliner on second to last. That way the crowd following the largest drawing band has to stay to the end. Of course this requires placating a lot of bruised egos.

Originally from Brooklyn and have been at the Afro-Punk fests there and totally know what you all are saying about the energy, etc. BK does it like that no matter where. LA scene was really different and not quite what I was expecting -- thought there would be FAR more people there - even if they weren't a part of the AP scene, but just to see Saul if anything. All of his shows that I saw in NYC, from the earliest shows at Nuyorican Poets Cafe to Bowery Bar and Fillmore East/Irving Plaza were ALL packed to the gills and full of beautiful brown skin.

New to the scene here in LA only 4 months and still finding my way around and there was NO WAY I was going to miss this show. Looking forward to catching other music gigs, house music gigs (especially), spoken word, etc. Glad there is at least this site to check in to for hot chit going on out here.
