Yea I was listening to Black Satin one day and it was during the time I wanted a set of Tablas and I was really excited when I heard the opening. It was pretty sick.

Lord...

The other day, I copped this Miles tribute CD called Miles from India. It is a collaboration of some Miles alumni and some Indian musicians (including some vocalists) covering some classics. I really like it--if you give The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions box set a good listen, anyone can see the worldbeat vision that Miles had back in the late 60's-early 70's. This one offers further Indian interpretation of some great cuts.

Sounds good. I grew up hearing a lot of bebop and avant garde in my house and dad's car (that guy Leon Thomas with the howling deep and high octave at the same time yodeling sound scared the shit out of me when I was young!!) and also a lot of Latin Jazz and Louis Jordan and Duke Ellington.

Actually you know when I really started liking it on my own? Mid to late 80's, when Joe Jackson did an album of old jazz and jump blues covers. It led me back to the originals. Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, (pops used to sing You Go To My Head a lot), Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Dave Brubeck, Machito Perez (he named my late brother after him), Miles Davis, John Coltrane. Eric Dolphy is also a particular special up top favorite of my dad. And you know me and my sister tracking down old reissued cd's of Eric Dolphy and Lucky Thompson (whom my pops took lessons with on saxophone when he was young) at Amoeba also led to me discovering all kinds of music and artists!!

Compound sent me some great Sun Ra tune awhile ago. And I've seen quite a lot of live shows when my job had many years of its Summer Nights jazz series from early to late 90's. Man, they had everybody out there old and new. Buddy Collette and his group played many times as well the new crowd of swing music with LaVay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. Vi Redd did a show and Gerald, that guy is a legend!! He did a seperate show where he brought his student jazz band from UCLA to do a "history of jazz" show. Amazing.
