Afro-punk

I often imagine what it would be like to have an Afro-Goth documentary? If one was to be made what would you want included in it?

Personally I would want the creator of the documentary to be a Goth themselves (or at least used to be). That way misconceptions could be avoided. I would also like a variety of ages shown. From afro baby bat to elder goth.

What about you?

I'm very intrigued by this discussion, and excited that it is happening. I've had my day in the goth scene and a believer in "once a goth always a goth", although I can't say that I'm up on what's happening in Goth today (maybe it's time to change that). There is a chance that some of my new music I'm coming up with for the new year may be considered a bit goth. Frequenting shows back in the hay day of The Cure, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy etc. and growing up in Colonial Williamsburg, VA, it wasn't always easy being the only black kid into goth and having to go to shows alone for the most part. I may be able to contribute with my perspective somehow:)

What a coincedence! I just posted to this group because I am working on a documentary in New York, where I live, about this very subject, and I'm looking to get connected with an Afro-Goth community here.

I don't know if you're familiar with NYC at all. Do you have any helpful suggestions for where I could begin?

Afro-punk is a platform for the other Black experience, the one we don't see in our media. D.I.Y (Do It Yourself) is the foundation.
