Afro Goth?

I often imagine what it would be like to have an Afro-Goth documentary? If one was to be made what would you want included in it?

Personally I would want the creator of the documentary to be a Goth themselves (or at least used to be). That way misconceptions could be avoided. I would also like a variety of ages shown. From afro baby bat to elder goth.

Yes! That would be cool. GPRocker, remember that one sista who did an article interview on some website link that Sola put up on the old page? See, I'd totally interview someone like her (I think she was in the U.K.) but I'd also interivew a young lady like Sola too, to get both attitudes and information from different generations, like Ms Dahl suggests.

Also, on a similar topic, would anyone want to try and create another AfroGoth/Goth of Color website? There have been prominent websites (Goths of Colour and Ethnic Goth), and both have sadly fallen. Most of the articles and pictures went down with them, and Ravenmoon (or something like that) had an article about goths of color, but the entire article section seems to have fallen as well. :)
Ideally, this one would use free hosting, just to give it a better chance of not being lost forever- it would also include an archive with pictures (submitted with permission) to give others an idea of wardrobe. If I wasn't a baby bat I would put the whole thing together myself, but I'd like more involvement from those experienced in the scene.

I live in texas where it's almost a sin to be black and like goth/metal/ whatever that isnt considered the "norm" for black people. I would love to see something like that , it would be so inspiring and amazing!!

That's a great idea! I'm taking another web design course this fall. Perhaps if I have enough time I could put something together. But, the site would need a group of people for input. If we get the word out perhaps we could get stories and such from other Goths of Colour on the web.

Totally... But I live in South Africa... No luck there. It would, however be greatly appreciated. And it would be an awesome resource in the constant head knock to get people to deal with the fact that goths that are not white do exist. I can practically see the documentary in my mind... Makes me want to make one...

If I can help, or if anyone is interested in my perspective, just let me know. I'm a 40-something eldergoth from Minnesota. When I was younger, before the term "Goth" came into popular usage, folks around here referred to people like us as "Darksiders" (or just "artsy"). Growing up here, I managed to avoid the kind of ridicule many of the kindergoths (especially those of color) have experienced because I happened to have hit my teens just as Prince was becoming a big deal. As a result, Minneapolis (both the majority White community and the insular African-American community) was much more accepting of Black kids dressing up funny and listening to British synth-pop than other urban areas around the US.

My main contribution to the culture at this point in my life, aside from attending the odd Goth-specific event around town, is my role as Admin for MyGoth, a Goth-oriented website with an international and multicultural membership. In this capacity, I've been contacted by academics and the media on more than one occasion, so I'm no stranger to providing a view of the Gothic subculture from an African-American point of view. Not only would I love so see some sort of documentary or expose, but I would be more than happy to contribute to something like that.
