Afro-punk

Afro-punk

Growing up in NYC I only saw one black person skateboarding. He went to school in Cali and when he came for vacation one summer he brought his board. The neighborhood kids including myself looked at him craze. Like what are you doing on a board that white folk’s sport. Now of days I realize the new generation is picking up the board and skating through the streets likes it's nothing. I realize the new culture of blacks is so open minding to trying out new things and making the old generation re-evaluating their way of thinking.

I so agree with you 100%.I'm an ex skater(1985-1997)when I started here in Providence "Rouge" Island no one black skated. The few whites and asains,in them days looked at me as a novilty.(they knew more about Tony Hawk and Christian Hosi than they did about Steve Stedham ,and Peanut Brown.)But I felt the pressure of them at the sessions, looking at you to be just as good as they were, but jelious when you were better than them.Sad but true most of my encoragement came from these people, and almost all my ridicule came from blacks.Through the years and into the 90's when skate boarding started to become more "urban"( due to the emergance of street skating)and less "suburban"I started to notice more black pros.(Ron Allen,Ray Barbie,Sean Sheffy)to name a few.More blacks were getting into it and opening doors for future brothers to find positive outlets. All it comes down to is chipping away at the stone. The more of us that do it for the love of it ,the more we inspire others to do it.Keep sk8ing!
