Hilariously I think it was the song Fuck The USA by The Exploited for me. The energy and non-radio friendliness of that song sucked me in and I started looking for punk bands at the record store. I had heard punk before that of course but I didn't even really know what it was until the nineties.

Before I heard that song, I thought no punk was "heavy enough" so for my heavy rock taste I stuck to metal.

24-7 Spyz. They had a crossover sound with Harder Than You but it was punk to my ears.

Also, eventhough i was already a full-fledged Metal-head, GG Allin was also one ov my 1st & few forerays into actual Punk music. Also, Suicidal Tendencies. Yeah, i really liked them, especially songs like "Waking the Dead" & Can't Bring Me Down"!

Hey, that's a great question! Social Distortion, The Clash, The Ramones. (Still not crazy about The Sex Pistols.)

The Clash is the first Punk band I actually remember but it was probably some band like the Offspring(pre- pretty fly for a white guy) that actually got me interested in Punk.. I remember liking "Basket Case" by Green Day. Once I discovered Bad Brains and all of the Dischord stuff it was all over...

The Ramones. I saw that movie "Rock and Roll High school". I would see Blondie T.V. and I liked that music too that and the Clash. I didn't quite know that was punk then I would watch "Night Flight" on the USA network and they would play punk videos. I saw that movie "Times Square" around 1981 and I really liked the ethos and the style even though I didn't know much about the music at that time. That was when I saw Suicidal Tendencies "Institutionalized" and Fishbone for the first time I liked the whole "skate rock" thing. Remember J.F.A. ? I still didn't know that there was any relation to the bands I liked because it was all rock and roll to me. Then around 86 or 87 I discovered Bad Brains then Murphy's Law .

Yeah pretty much. Over hyped and over analyzed as well.

Of course you seem to view overrated as a negative but that's your own hang up and misunderstanding.
The whole construct is overrated. People don't consider the Clash punk because they don't fit into that overrated construct of "punk" which is very un-punk by including a litmus test of "punker than thou".

Yes Green Day. I used to like Green Day. And the Offspring. Maybe not so much now but then, yes. Perhaps it's not the coolest answer but it's the truth. The question was what band got you into punk? I'm a Black dude that was pretty much raised around Black people from jump. So most of my early exposure to any rock music was through mainstrean outlets. Once I got in I had to seek out the better shit on my own. All my friends weren't white skateboarders who walked around with signed copies of Minor Threat 7''s. We was black, tryin to rap and shit and not get killed or locked up before we got out of high school. So yeah i guess I just wasn't as cool as you and I never will be. You have the title of darkest, most edgiest, most leftist, non-conformist dude on lock. I'm too "well-adjusted" to even come close. But who cares.

This kinda who's punk and not punk shit is getting a little dated. Normally i just take it with a grain of salt and laugh but this shit is kinda annoying today. Maybe I'll take a break. Seeing people with their noses so far up their own arse is starting to nauseate me.
