Get us the Olympics? I don't benefit from the Olympics happening in this country. From what I know, Activists in Chicago have been fighting so the Olympics WOULD NOT take place in their city. The Olympics is an institution that is in business PURELY to make money. Tickets for shows are too expensive for 'us' to even go unless we are the 'help'. Not to mention the fact that the Olympic games reinforce feelings of nationalism and gender binaries under the guise of athletic competition that are ripe with human rights abuses and scandals.

African and African American people have won gold medals and received recognition as world-class athletes via the Olympics. I'm sure little kids look up to these same professional athletes with the dreams of one day breaking world records. There is nothing wrong with hope, but we will not build the communities we want by sending our most talented bodies to the Olympics to be exploited for ticket sales; the profits of which no body at the bottom ever sees.

Our cities will be cleaned up. Police will be everywhere to enforce security. People will be put in jail or moved if they don't fit the ideal of what an American city looks like, ie being homeless.

I say fuck the Olympics. I don't give a damn if the Republicans are mad that Obama didn't get 'us' the Olympics... I don't align myself with the same interests that serve to harm me.

NO GAMES Chicago = activist group that even went to the IOC to hand deliver a report on why Chicago would be the shittiest host of the games. lol.

I am disappointed though that the Chicago Transit Authority plans to increase regular bus fare to three dollars along with the fares for various discount cards. I feel that this is their backlash to activists who organized against the Olympics. Why increase the fare when thousands of Chicagoans are still unemployed and suffering from foreclosures and debt?? It is totally illogical. People need disposable income to stimulate the economy, therefore, prices of goods and services need to depreciate to stabilize it. Yet, our economic structure on a global scale is fucked up and entrenched in predatory credit/debt practices, which favors the rich over the poor. Unfortunately, the process of gentrification will continue in Chicago regardless of the victorious disappearance of the Olympic bid. Hopefully we are able to organize the necessary social capital to resist this potential, yet eminent catastrophe.

Hello Jovi!!!!!! Thanks for responding to my topic.

First I would like to say that you have enlightened me with your response. I did not know that the local social activist population in Chicago did not want the Olympics. This speaks volumes to me because I am myself an activist in my hometown of Baltimore City. My position was that we should want the president to be successful in his ventures both nationally and internationally...... and I thought that if you guys were the center of attention (globally speaking) for such an event ,it would be great for Chicago, the home town of the first black president of the U.S.( politically speaking ,of course).
