Toke Like a Girl
http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=291308

I've noticed for a while that very few women smoke marijuana in comparison to those that use alcohol and other drugs. While some of the women I know use it socially, the presence of any who regularly smoke weed is scant. I'm not saying that this a problem or anything, I'm just wondering, why?

This may also explain why most "Stoner Movies" are centered around men getting marijuana, food and/or "chicks, man".

Well?

I would agree that stoner ladies are pretty elusive but when they realize other females smoke they come out of the woodworks.
I'm part of a growing female artist collective that I started in my city and the majority of the girls all smoke. So I would say on a regular 12+ of us get together and blaze. Its really interesting and inspiring to see us all together and it literally astounds guys when they see so many girl smokers at once. We generally smoke locally grown sativa that is more stimulating and keeps us productive rather than lying around and the majority of lady stoners I know are incredibly knowledgeable about all things weed related from blends to etiquette.

I feel like as a whole most stoner girls are very functional to the point that you don't even recognize them or predict them as being "stoners" I work full time, go to school full time, run my own crafting side business, work in my studio, and have a busy social life and unless I inform someone that I smoke ( and they generally are surprised) they are oblivious to it. I don't have time to sit around munching cheetos, watching family guy reruns, and taking rips from the bong like many guy stoners I know.

I've also noticed that there are few female dealers-- most male dealers I know would rather sell weed so they don't have to pay for their own whereas females are more likely to work more to afford weed than take the risk of dealing. I agree with Cocoa that smoking does stink-- and i've noticed more women tend to use vaporizers for health reasons or infuse food with cannabis oil rather than smoke. I think guys are a little lazy and would rather roll a blunt but I would happily bake some triple chocolate brownies anyday.

Of course, I'm using the term "functional" very loosely; more like "they can get up and do w/e they want to do". In movies/books/etc you only hear of unmotivated slackers or women in "trouble". I brought this up b/c I've been picking up on a lot of sexism amongst stoners and in "stoner culture" and it's always annoyed the hell out of me; so recently I figured "I'll just find some ladies who smoke and see what they go through " and behold...their are (practically) none.

I've been asking around lately and alot of the women that don't smoke (that I know) either just never tried it, tried it and didn't like it or have this "Reefer Madness" attitude about it (most were of the second kind). I'm not sure if this is true for most (since I only asked a handful of people).

To CPZ:
That book sounds interesting! I never learned that Rastfari Women couldn't smoke with men; but the homophobia put me off :(

I see a lot of talk/movies/tv/etc that touch on functional male potheads but womena are hardly depecited as functional drug users (unless that drug is alcohol, ciggarettes, etc).

Pill poppers, diet pill addicts, baseheads, and so on in film and books...dunno if i'd exactly call them 'functional'...same with the male space cadets.

IRL i know functional ppl who take "drugs".

Women smoke their own chalice....men smoke their own.

Part of this is rooted in the spirituality of herb. Herb is for the enlightment of the Rasta woman and man, and purity is a large component of that (i.e. you dont need to always be aorund and share things with the opposite sex, sometimes you need consecration to keep yourself intact).

Dont take it all at face value and jump to extreme claims of "sexism".......real Rastas dont subjugate women, real Rastas dont limit themselves to dogma in the Bible relating to treating women second class

Respect.

I read in this book about Rastafari women by Obiagele Lake that traditionally women weren't allowed to smoke with the men. It's just how their culture was. I read the book a long time ago, but I remember it mentioning Rastas being very sexist sometimes, and some of the women did smoke or wanted to. It's like they were subordinate or something, that's actually the title of the book, "Subordination in the midst of liberation theology".

As far as american culture goes, I'm not so sure. Personally I think marijuana is gross, and makes your breath smell like ass, so I don't smoke it that much. Only when I go hang out with this other afropunk guy who smokes all the time. I have like two puffs and I'm cool.

I think to take it a step further, maybe now people don't smoke because they don't want a dirty UA and are looking for jobs. That is definitely a deterrent.

I think that as a former smoker, sometimes the acquisition process can be a bit -- perilous? Not trying to be overdramatic, but I have had guys try to test me, charge me more, etc. just because I am a woman. I also feel like women are a bit quieter about smoking because in certain circles there is a stigma attached to any kind of smoking concerning women, but of course, for men it's ok. LOL

Yeah, women get treated like suckers. ...even when buying weed. *shakes head*

REALLY??? lol...WOW.

I never knew all this iniquity went on regarding a herb. Try to deal with more righteous herbalists :)

Totally agree with you-- whenever I deal with someone I dont know I am always sure to know of all the local prices to make sure I'm not scammed because I have got burnt before. I usually will bring a scale with me or as to see it weighed just to get it across I'm serious lol.
Dealers like to pinch chicks bags thinking we're too stupid to notice or some shit.

Finding the perfect dealer is like finding a unicorn-- I can't stand sketchy dealers!

HMMM

I notice the majority of yall who claim to be scammed by herb dealers live outside of California...in far-flung places like Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee, etc. Get out of those places if you want good herb service, lol

Well...I live in Southern California, we have loads of female "stoners" (lord i hate that term...makes me think of Biblical murder) who deal by the POUND. My ex was a cheeba hawk, as are 96% of the girls you see at the reggae concerts out here. Not to mention all those girls who listen to stuff like Insame Clown Posse, Slightly Stoopid and Sublime...they smoke more than most males I ve encountered.

I as a MALE have been schemed out of herb deals and overcharged on numerous occasions, so its all relative...lol

very true I would love to live in cali and nevermind dealers at that point I would rather grow it myself. There is plenty of green around but I live in a college town and unless you want to go wandering off in the national forests looking for weed, or travel to S FL for something more cheap you just have to deal with the prices and the sketchy people.

I agree but its generally relative with anyones experience. I've just come to this conclusion after I talked to several guys who said they have never experienced all the shit my lady friends and I have.
I dont like lady stoners either-- we need to create a nice term for us lol
