Sudanese law calls for 40 lashes for anyone "who commits an indecent act which violates public morality or wears indecent clothing." For women, indecent clothing includes the outfit Hussein wore when she was arrested and again during her first hearing on July 29: a loose-fitting top, headscarf and green slacks.
Ten of the women arrested have already accepted punishment of 10 lashes each, but Hussein and two other women still face charges.
Hussein has appealed her case in the hope of bringing international attention to the plight of Sudanese women. She waived her immunity as a U.N. worker in the case and told AFP her goal is to have the law regulating clothing repealed.
"If I'm sentenced to be whipped, or to anything else, I will appeal. I will see it through to the end, to the constitutional court if necessary," Hussein said. "And if the constitutional court says the law is constitutional, I'm ready to be whipped not 40 but 40,000 times."
Hussein told AFP thousands of women have been flogged for their clothing over the last two decades, but it is not publicized because those prosecuted fear no one would believe them. By becoming a voice for these women, Hussein said, "I've already won half the battle."
Hussein is scheduled to judged Tuesday and she said she plans to wear the same "indecent" outfit to court.

The cool thing about this lady is she works for the UN, meaning she could've applied for immunity, but she didn't because she wanted to make a statement. That's punk!

*sigh* this is what happens when you mix religion, culture. True, we all agree that America has it's faults, but at least women can wear pants without being whipped.

For awhile, tho- longer in the south, it continued at least until the mid 60s in some parts- if you weren't wearing at least one article of "women's clothing" you could be kicked out of a place for being "indecent" that's fairly recent American history. It's gone now but it happened.

Trouser-wearing reporter banned from leaving Sudan

Tue Aug 11, 7:50 am ET

KHARTOUM (AFP) – A Sudanese woman journalist who risks 40 lashes for wearing trousers said on Tuesday that the authorities have banned her from travelling to Lebanon to take part in a talk show.

Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein told AFP she was due to leave overnight for Lebanon to tape a television show but that police at the Khartoum airport prevented her from boarding her plane.

"They told me that due to a decision from August 7, I was banned from travelling abroad," Hussein said. "I asked them to show me a written document containing the decision but they were unable to do so."

Hussein, a widow in her 30s, was charged with public indecency under Sudan's Islamic law after she and 12 other women were arrested last month for wearing trousers at a Khartoum restaurant.

Her trial has been adjourned to September 7 to determine whether Hussein, a journalist on a Sudanese newspaper who also works for the UN press office in Khartoum, has legal immunity.

Hussein has said she wants to be tried to challenge a law that decrees a punishment of whipping for people wearing "indecent" clothes, and told a hearing last week that she wished to waive her UN immunity.

Ten women have already been whipped for the same offence -- including Christians -- and Hussein has said she will fight a guilty verdict and the law itself.

Hussein's case has triggered widespread outrage at home and abroad.

At the last hearing on August 4, Sudanese riot police used tear gas against hundreds of people demonstrating outside the Khartoum courtroom in protest at the trial, including activists from opposition parties.
