I'm doing a little research and am looking for various forms art performers...

Are there any perfomance artists on AP?

Or do you know of any artists worth checking out?

Way back at MOCA we had an exhibit called "Out of Actions" about performance artists.

I guess the earliest person people talked about in the public was Yoko Ono. The definition of what is performance art always varies, it could all the way from Yoko sitting on the floor having random people come up with a pair of scissors to cut off a piece of her black sweater to the really involved and complex onstage shows of Ron Athey and his troupe.

The one's I've seen live or on film or read about between early 90's and now are: Look these people up on the internet (or PM me and I think I have links already about these people, some of them). Of course, I bet there are some Youtube clips by now. If you want a description of the kind of think these artists perform, let me know!

I highlighted the one's that are most interesting, in my own opinion.

Ron Athey
Gunter Brus
Karen Finley
Divinity Fudge (I actually saw this brother because he was in some Ron Athey performances)
Vaginal "Creme" Davis (he also is known for the bands he's had, cross that art/music line, like Cholita)
Rachel Rosenthal
Anne Sprinkle (yes she went from the early porn industry to doing these very intimate stuff performances.)
Johanna Went
Laurie Anderson (yes she was doing that along with or before her musical recordings)
Leigh Bowery (you have got to see the documentary about him. GREAT and CREATIVE FUN stuff!!)
Diamanda Galas (I also feel it's the art/music crossing here, her shows are great and INTENSE)
Hermann Nitsch
Genesis P-Orridge (he is well known on his own but also as part of COUM Transmissions and later Throbbing Gristle)
The Residents (funny I just thought of them as interesting and great band but now I see it's conisdered perf art also.)
Survival Research Laboratories (grrrl get one of their DVD's. INSANE and creepy to see the big machines they make!)

Andy Kaufman - you should be able to find his stuff on YouTube...
Last Poets - performance poets more than artists, but their stuff has impact...

Jahluv I am so glad you mentioned Andy Kaufman. All those "other" characters he did were a TRIP. Especially that one which he was basically a very loud and overbearing polyester suit wearing obnoxious fellow. I saw that biography about him with a friend saying he'd go so far deep into that part sometimes it made them wonder if he'd lost himself in it.

Last Poets I've seen several times in the past 20 years. Amazing how those brothers cut to the chase, in the middle of their flow and rhythm onstage, about things that EVERYBODY (even teenagers) can relate. Makes me feel they are paying way more attention to what's going on in the outside world and affecting our people than a lot of young people realize.
