Afro-punk

Afro-punk

Growing up in NYC I only saw one black person skateboarding. He went to school in Cali and when he came for vacation one summer he brought his board. The neighborhood kids including myself looked at him craze. Like what are you doing on a board that white folk’s sport. Now of days I realize the new generation is picking up the board and skating through the streets likes it's nothing. I realize the new culture of blacks is so open minding to trying out new things and making the old generation re-evaluating their way of thinking.

Like when I was a kid? Hell naw!

It's amazing, when I was in my teens - I could fall from the top of a ramp, pool, or bowl, jump up like I had springs in my feet and keep skating for the rest of the day - all skate rashed up. I've lost that talent in my old age - today when I fall, it hurts! For a few days!

I was at work today fooling around on a co-worker's board in the parking lot. It was fun, but I don't have the fire anymore.

I got into some extreme mtn. biking for a minute. But that's a whole 'nother thread right there. Good luck with your company...

Man, I remember the white kids used to skate board through downtown Silver Spring, MD and there'd be a few niggas skating too, but nothing like today! Have there been any black dudes, like, killing in the X-Games recently? (Excuse my ignorance on this topic)

Thanks for linking those old threads JL. I don't know if Kaiser is on the new board, but he or she would enjoy the following docs. They cover aspects of skating from the 80s into the 90s
Hosoi: Rising Son (I still owe you a copy, JL)
World Indstries: The Man who souled the world
Gator: Stoked: The rise and fall of Gator

On Skateboarding Winter 2003(bio of Natas Kaupas) Probably hard to find, but it's on here on youtube

(somewhat)more recent footage of bros on board. Good luck Blackboard, Cocoa, Electro and whoever else is doing it.

Gershon Mosely

Shuriken Shannon (that name is almost as cool as Plaxico Barnes)

Bastien Salabanzi

I totally agree with you BB25...in my neighborhood I'm sorta looked up to because of how long I've been sk8n and because of how good I've got...
I cant say too much for the new culture of blks just because I'm sure the ratio of the open-minded still is trumped by the negative, at least in my part of brooklyn but, we sure are making a statement...
