Afro-punk

Well?

My parents are Nigerian, but I was born in NJ so I'm Nigerian American.
I was just curious to see who the "kid's-of-African-parent's" were on this board. I think I've seen a few...
Any stories about growing up in a different country with jamaican/african/haitian/etc parents?

Spill!

My mommy is from Panama, my stepdaddy is from St Vincent & The Grenadines, my real daddy is American (Bronx). I consider myself Afro-Carib-Latin-American, though there are times I feel more like a Yankee than anything else.

Mi padre is Nigerian. Mi mama is Caribbean-American via U.S. territory. That makes me... alive.

My Mom and Dad were born and bred in Nigeria.
I was born in NJ. I guess I am Nigerian American then.
I think we need a Nigerian AfroPunks group. Haha

Born in the US (D.C., raised in Philly). Parents from the Caribbean (both born in Guyana, SouthAmerica; though my Mom's folks are from Nevis & Grenada).

In Philly this used to be an anomoly growing up, West Indian parents & American children ('yo, where is your Dad from, Jamaica?...) . But by my teens I found out this was most common with many Black folks in northeastern cities like New York City.

It was happily shocking to find out over time that most all folks invovled in NYC Hip Hop were from the Caribbean/West Indies. From Kool Herc (Jamaica), Grandmaster Flash (Barbados), Afrika Bambaataa (JA & Barbados), Fat Joe (Puerto Rico/Cuba), Big Pun (Dominican Republic), Busta Rhymes (JA), LL Cool J (JA), Salt & Pepa (JA), Herbie 'Lovebug' Azor (Haiti), Wyclef (Haiti), Biggie/BIG (JA), Jay-Z (Grenada), etc.

Born here in Houston,Texas, but my dad was born in New Orleans Louisiana. Mom was born in some small town in north Louisiana .So technically I'm a Texan(by birth),but got Louisiana blood running in my veins.

Yo! Jenny we the have the same name!

*high fives*

My parents are nigerian and I was born in Nigeria but I'm a Londoner first and foremost.

Random fact: Nigeria is currently the most emigrated african nation so if you're black in a non-african country you're most likely to be of Nigerian heritage (slave trade aside).

while we're at it, what the hell, my parents are from the part of Nigeria called Annapolis, Maryland...it's in the Niger Delta region with machine gun-toting, MEND rebels...but wait, I was also born there, too, so we're African-Annapolitan-Americans.

Might as well rename the site - "Nigerian punks" since every other person is Nigerian. :D This fact does make one ponder the implications of Nigerian heritage - creates the free thinking Black youth of this generation. Just a thought.

But, as for my heritage- My mom's a Centaur and my father is a Gust of Wind. Me, I ended up a fish.

^^ lovely pic but the question that strikes me is "what kinda event are they at?" The women to their right seems to be wearing an unfortunate bridemaids' dresses and what's with the gold goblet?
