I like the Chinese Zodiac a lot, presently. It's vague traits are better than the Western zodiac but the two are great when combined. Susan White's "New Astrology" is awesome. Whenever, I have to do a "make up" of someone I never met (a common subject is Harpo Marx) I usually use her book to set the scene.

What's your animal?
Do you find your animal accurate?

What animal are you?
http://www.chinavoc.com/zodiac/index.asp
How would you get on with other animals?
http://www.proastro.com/?o=compatibility&act=animalshow

What's your element?

And the old stand-by "What's your sign?"

And if you really want to mix it up add in your Dosha to get a more physical sense.

It's good for when you get bored or forget some things. It's also neat to see what famous people have the exact same make up as you. Element and animals all.

Most Asian (east asian and all, central asia even has their own version- they win the lame award for switching around dragon and hare- srs) cultures have their own wheel with different animals involved. This wheel is the only one to include a random mythological beast. ...but that's for the cryptozoologists to deal with it. It is curious, tho.

Rat.
Wood.
Capricorn.

...

I was going to say that the arguable traits assigned to my animal, and especially my element, might be better observed and confirmed by others, 'cause some of them don't appear to be congruent. But the Ayurveda thing made me giggle; kinda knocked all the little blocks into their proper filler places...

"Your scores are Vata: 5 Pitta: 2 Kapha: 3
Based on your results, you are a VATA"

(sooooo... Vata-Pitta, I think?)

That's the first time I've ever smiled about my bones cracking...

I think everyone is a bit of all 3. It's VERY similar to the "are you a mesomorph(pitta), ectomorph(vatta) or endomorph(kappha)?"
I am mostly vatta with some kappha on the side. I'm skinny, my hair never shines and I have an issue with sitting still.

It's very interesting that you are a Rat/Wood. I'm plotting to marry/kidnap someone who is the same sign right now. For some reason I was thinking you were a few more years older than me. It explains a bit tho.

I am a Dragon/Earth. .... Leo.

Born in '85.

Heh, I suppose smoking, knuckle-cracking and nail-biting ties into my fidgety nature... obviously not in a good way.

Good luck with the kidnap.=P

Never came across a construct that took body type into account before; will definitely read up more on that...

Rabbit, Aquarius, Fire.

It suits me pretty well. Unfortunately I'm extra aloof (Aquarians and Rabbits aren't the easiest to get to know on a really personal level). Kinda wish I was a dog? I dunno. Dating a Capricorn/Aquarius Cusp Pig right now. It works.

I am familiar with that combination in my personal life. Didn't work out too good. ^__^

It's fun. It's also neat to be a Dragon (the only sign that really matters). I don't care if it's stupid to skeptics like you or whatever your reason is for being against it. No one is saying it gives you magical powers or anything like that. What's wrong with it? I like elements, animals and also, it's kinda REALLY eurocentric to assume that a non-western medical practice is all voodoo and goobledegook. Don't you realize that?
There's also more in this world than what some european tradition tells you there is.

You see it as fun, but there is someone out there who is basing their whole life around this stuff. I don't know if you guys realize this, but this stuff was invented by people who believe that balls of gas in the universe actually has an effect on your everyday life. Huh, when you break it down it doesn't sound so mystical does it?

"Non Western Medicine"

What? Who said anything about medicine? Medicine is neither eastern nor Western. Medicine should be clinically tested.
If it wasn't for scrutiny then we'd have assholes peddling stuff like, "AMBUSH" cures Aids. Or people trying to heal ailing cancer patients with Tuning forks (Yeah...who posted that by the way?).

What's up with the whole Science be racist? European gobbly de gook is panned also (See. Homeopathy).

"There's also more in this world than what some european tradition tells you there is."

Oh, please.

I can't be worried about what someone else is doing. Just because someone else is basing their whole life around it doesn't mean I can't enjoy it.

Medicine enters into this because the last link is to an Ayurvedic style of medicine that takes into account body types and nature. It's used in traditional indian medicine, including indian bodywork (massage, yoga) which is how I came into contact with it.

I don't care if it doesn't sound so mystical to you, it's fun. You just have a really irrational dislike of it you're taking out on people who are not basing their whole lives on it.

Eastern medicine is/was clinically tested and written about long before. There's something to be said for it. Just because it doesn't fit into parameters invented by an exclusionary society doesn't make it any less valid. Science was defined and written by prejudiced white men in the past who scoffed at anything not from Europe. That's where "science be racist" comes from. Anything from Asia (east, west, central, north, south) is usually always deemed "nonsense" because it didn't come from white minds. You have to admit that does still exist.

And yes, there's more to every thing than what some old white men have told us. Instead of investigating and cooperating they tore things down and discredited them and labeled them as "inferiors". Certainly, some things are magical thinking but it's unfair to assume that anyone is "basing their whole lives around it" just because they enjoy it. It's also unfair to assume just because something isn't "science" that it's not science.

I don't have time for you judging people who are just having a good time with it. If you don't like it, don't read it but don't come in telling other people what to believe in or like.

And this is coming from an atheist. Just put that in perspective before you run around being insulting.

Oh, please.

Got to say it's true though... there are things that western science shrugs off as tradition rather than science or another culture's insights... and western clinicians don't exactly have all the time or resources to empirically check seemingly random traditions from other parts of the world--especially from ppls deemed more primitive than the west.
