Afro-punk

I'm really not feeling all of the hip hop groups riding the afro-punk wave. I mean, seriously, Bonecrusher? Can we keep this to punk, metal, hardcore, experimental? Pretty much whatever, except rap?

I checked out all 3 of those groups that you mentioned above. To be diplomatic, I would rather listen to DJ Quik any day of the week. But you dig them and other people here might dig them, so it's all gravy. No need to ban anyone.
n need for a history lesson. not everyone on here was born in the 70s though or grew up in brooklyn or gives a shit about hip hop and how it was created yadda yadda yadda. it's nice to have a place where things are really afro-punk and punk music is played and appreciated. when you start adding different stuff to it, then it changes the whole definition of it.

all of these old people and their goddam history of hip hop shit... jeezus christ.

there are other festivals and other things going on with hip hop and those groups can have those artists. you don't need to create a space for EVERYONE. you can have limits and boundaries and appreciate their music, but just not have them on here.
ditto on the age group thing.

i don't see the negative aspects of having afropunk available for hip hop music makers and listeners. afropunk.com has transcended musical genres and has united people of various ethnicities together on this forum to discuss politics, music, identity, and life. it's about the community now, and solidarity is empowering. if you don't happen to like hip hop, you're not forced to listen. i think shutting out those participants would be an injustice not only for them, but also for you. hearing or in this case, reading other peoples perspectives is important for personal growth. identity is constantly evolving, and it's important to continuing experiencing, listening to, and discussing our perspectives with other people, despite our differences. it is in challenging individual convictions that you can discover greater truth, reaffirming or changing ideas you once held dear. that said, afropunk.com is AWESOME!
also, i'm really glad i could participate in the discussion.
Sometimes to get things started a young person has to stand up and give everything before them the middle finger. With these words the future began:

SO YEAH- maybe we should rethink a lot of the Rock/Rap hybrids, lame disco/techno crap that gets featured here... just because it's bad.
As one of the AP geezers - I laugh my ass off when the youngsters here are still worshiping 30 year old punk and new wave groups like they just put out a new album yesterday. WTF!?

I really don't mind the hip hop acts at the AP shows--as long as they have a band. Seriously, I live for live music, so when I see two dudes just pacing back and forth rhyming over a straight loop, the yawns commence.

I also see the viewpoints of those that want a straight rock show--these venues don't have to be all-inclusive.
*yawn*

I have a suggestion: maybe we should get rid of all bands with white members too since they're not really "afro" punk. Oh, and how is rock considered punk music? All rock bands need to go. Any band that has shit other than drums, bass and a guitar, gone as well. Shoot, now afropunk can truly be for afro punk bands! Yea!

I'm sorry, this suggestion is silly and speaks on a level of "I can't stand hip hop, and now it's invading MY rock space." The site may be called afropunk, but obviously the owners are into offering black alternative bands. If those band may be hip hop, then so what. Should a band that plays a mixture of genres be excluded from afropunk because one of the genres they play is hiphop? Besides, hip hop is very much a part of the Black experience as rock. I dunno ...
we will all eventually end up rapping, i guess.
WT__..Here it goes again...DIVISION ON THE RISE...I just don't understand why this comes uo in every aspect of life. The young vs the old, black vs white, hardcore vs soft, punk vs rap, natural hair vs straight .Yaada yaada yaada..I mean look....Black culture is limitless and we have introduced so many different sounds/styles to the music world and HAVE been copied and followed..Yeah I'm a 70's baby who embraces the new and the old..History is so important though. It shows us the origin of things. I mean...How can you not want to know about how something started or where it all began. I joined this site cause it was a venue that showcases not only black artist but also allowed Blacks to discuss and share their love for music outside of the r&b,hip hop realm..However, that being said, I wouldn't start the pointing of the finger thing on who belongs here and who doesn't . AP knows what they're doing and music is the universal language...Isn't it???If the site only had punkers(TRUE PUNKERS), it wouldn't be as diverse as it is considering the fact that the movement started in the mid to late 70's.They're married with kids and their kids having kids, not really bloggin on sites. I listened to The Ramones and The Clash but I also listened to KRS ONE, TRIBE and other Rap Artists..I'm a MUSIC LOVER..I don't have a look of any type that you could say I listen to this or that..I don't limit myself to any particular look sound or style and I hope Afro Punk won't either. I've been introduced to so many different bands and people on this site..Again Thanks AP..
And thank you Keisha, very well said. Matthew
