... Like someone said earlier, I don't understand why they think she was sold off for prostitution. I don't expect all details to be divulged so soon (if at all), but that's also why I don't understand why popular sentiment, thus far, favors the assumption that this woman is guilty of that particular crime. It's as if, simply because it's a child crime, everyone automatically assumes the accused is guilty. Nobody knows anything about this woman's parenting skills, based on the slivers of personal information peppered into the articles published thus far. From what I could gather, she hasn't admitted to anything, and doesn't seem to know this McNeill character personally.
And here's one for the "Unpop" thread: I have a feeling that the father is not what would be considered "African-American." Somebody might rightfully tell me that has nothing to do with a child's victimization, but I think it has much to do with how this story has been presented thus far. She's the perfect foil to the caring father, and some angry folk are going to enjoy "justifiably" disliking her nappy-headed self, based on some of the blog comments I've seen already, making reference to this woman's hair texture, supposed "race", and other irrelevant superficialities (as if these are signifiers of a person's abilities to be a fit parent -- some subconscious shit). Methinks if this woman wasn't black, AP folk would shed one little "(American) Indian tear" and keep it moving.
I agree with Damos on some points (see: tangents in the John Muhammad thread) regarding the "guilty till proven innocent" sentiment that pervades crimes horrendous enough to shock people. From the looks of the news articles I've read so far, cops don't even know enough yet. Either that, or they don't yet care or find it feasible to present any evidence publicly against the mother to justify her arrest.
i also don't think the dad is black. but i'm not sure, i haven't seen a picture of him, but i'm sure it'll be on the news soon and he'll be interviewed and what not.
i thought the person who admitted to kidnapping her (mario mcneil) was an ex boyfriend of the mother. also black. also with dreads. his picture was obviously on the news already too. the media is funny like that. if people are innocent until proven guilty then why does the media get to post their picture everywhere and slam them the way they do? it's like we can all form our own opinion of them without getting all the facts first. i know i'm guilty of this right now. i automatically assumed she was guilty and i still don't know the whole story. i still think she has a lot to do with shaniya's disappearance/death though.

yeah to both of your concerns... but for some reason to me turning this into a racial issue is sad...>

Afro-punk is a platform for the other Black experience, the one we don't see in our media. D.I.Y (Do It Yourself) is the foundation.
