Think about it. What exactly classifies as black entertainment? Why can't they (BET awards) include blacks in alternative forms of music? Like Best Black Alternative Artist? Or something like that. They completley ignore black people within the rock, metal, techno, etc music scenes. I think thats bullshit.
We should have the Afropunk Awards.
I think black folks who don't even like that type of music should atleast know about other black artist in the scene.
Anyone agree, disagree?

BET's become a one trick pony in its portrayal of Black music. You should watch the documentary Beyond The Rhymes. It really points out how BET and a lot of artist themselves don't really give a shit about the music they put out.

I always wish they would. It's so disappointing. We exist! I agree with you.

I agree, but also look at MTV, when was the last time they showed music videos without any screaming fans? There's no win win situation when it comes to music video stations :(

BET isn't geared towards black people. Its more of a 24 hour minstrel show for white kids in middle America. They've tried to change their format but it still sucks. After people pointed out that they replayed dozens of music videos followed by Peter Poppoff they just added syndicated sitcoms.

Now they're starting to take Mtvs shows and just add Black people (Baldwin Hills?, ha).

BET is owned by Viacom (Old white dudes). And every once and while they a forum dedicated to Hip Hop. Featuring Micahel Dyson (I don't like this guy, and I don't know why.) and non mainstream rappers who don't really get to say a whole lot.

Honestly, I wish the channel would just change its name.

Well, they had Stic-Man of Dead Prez on the forum and he maybe said maybe like one thing. Nobody said anything about Viacom (the gorrilla in the room). No one mentioned that the majority of hip hop is bought by white people.

I agree.

They should just change it to MET. Minstrel Entertainment Network.
Or better yet, just take it off the air!

Do they still have BET After Dark?( Emoticon)

Two words. Bob Johnson.

He used his success to fill his pockets to live the all American greed and could care less what sort of image BET was/is projecting. Before he sold BET it was already gone. I don't put too much emphasis on BET and if they hate us or not. They solely cater to people who listen to certain music. I don't and never felt left out. Because it's nothing new.

I was kind of disappointed when I learned that BET phased out their nightly news segments. It's such a crying shame. A similar "black television network" TV One doesn't air nightly or at least weekly news segments. I think it's really important especially when the news media are dominated by whites, and how they have the tendency to show empathy for fellow whites and show blacks in negative light or not nearly as empathetic or could care less what happens.

Sure TV One air reruns of old tv shows, back to back 24/7 nonstop but can't make a spot for a 30 minutes of news a day or even once a week!

Something is seriously wrong here. That's all.

I don't think it's a coincidence. One black orientated news show, Like It Is which now I miss more than often because I'm sleeping, busy or just forgetful comes on Sunday afternoons when no one is watching.

Yes, I think BET's been probably the most destructive thing to happen to black people since slavery. It really is that bad.

Worse than crack cocaine and heroin, gang related fratricide, jim crow, mass lynchings, redlining, cointelpro, the Tuskegee experiment, etc.? It's one channel out of more than a hundred on our cable dials. No one is forcing anyone to watch it. I'm not saying it's the best channel, but it was made to make money for someone else by selling advertising, not to be a babysitter/surrogate parent/role model. Vote with your remotes, y'all.

I hate that BET does aknowlegde the other genres of music that black ppl are also represented in. It's completely unfair...it's freakin' discrimination.

i definantely agree...i listen to all types of music...i love neo soul and r&b ...and i also like alternative music....my style and taste is definately on the sceen of laternative and rock....i do believe that BET should recognize it more...but they have so many issues and problems...them not recognizing the afro punk culture???...just add it to their list of things they dont do....

I had to do research myself on the internet b4 i even knew people like me existed....

There's no *real* solution to the BET problem. In order to get the investment and advertising revenue to create such an entity, you have to sell out, unless you are already massively wealthy. More importantly, the average person might hate BET, but also loves it. Because it's entertainment that helps them feel better about their lives, either by giving them certain images for them to fantasize about, or to help them feel that they are "better than those Negroes"

My only advice is to get down with YouTube and talk about the things that matter to you on it, and tell your friends. Write a blog, create original content and spread the word.
