1983 - I was 16 years old when my best friend Sean came back from New Jersey with a shitload of tapes and videos he made while on vacation. Just stuff off the radio and TV - but we had seen none of it in Los Angeles...

This clip off of YouTube was one of the things I remember... In retrospect, why was Leslie Uggams involved in this project?

^^^I give the producers & hosts props 'cause this was actually one of the more respectful & accurate stories on Hip Hop culture of the time that I've seen. Carlos was the man from NY Hot Tracks and Uggams surprisingly came correct.

I don't know if this is true or not - but this mixtape that has just been posted on the internets claims to be the unrelased, original tracks from Biggie's "Ready to Die." Inability to clear samples is supposedly what kept these tracks tucked away... who knows?

Anyway - the album is downloading as I type this, I have no idea if it's any good. Props once again to Stone over at the Couch Sessions blog: http://www.thecouchsessions.com/index.php

The Talib doc looks interesting Jahluv. He's one I appreciated even more live. When Blackstar came out, I wasn't really feeling his flow but when I saw him in concert, whoa!

Dude is like the opposite of old De La Soul I remember; he comes alive much stronger in concert than on record where De La used to be stronger on record than live (but they got good quick after De La is Dead). Talib may have a sometimes stiff, preachy-teachy tone on records (& I'm an advocate of intellectual lyricism) but he put powerful life into those jams onstage. He's no studio herb. 'Hot Thang' is my jawn!

I'm gonna check that original Ready To Die. One true test is that if the 'Me & My Bitch' version uses a more basic part of that Minnie Ripperton song (that I'm blanking on; forgot the name, damn...I'll dig it up).

Oh, & back to Compound's Crazy Beats List. More to add:

= DE LA SOUL ---Afro Connections, Freedom of Speak, Ego Trippin' II, Shu Fe Mc's (Q-Tip rips this jawn, check it)
= A TRIBE CALLED QUEST--- Excursions, Electric Relaxation, Jazz (remix), Footprints, Buggin' Out, Push It Along
= JUNGLE BROTHERS --- Jimbrowski, Sounds of The Safari, JB's Comin' Through, Behind The Bush, Beads on a String
= ERIC B. & RAKIM --- I Ain't No Joke, As The Rhyme Goes On, Lyrics of Fury, No Omega
= GANGSTARR --- Take It Personal, Mass Appeal, U Know My Steez, Speak Ya Clout
= ULTRA MAGNETIC MC'S --- Ego Trippin', Funky, Watch Me Now, Delta Force, Ultra Part II, Give The Drummer Some, Kool Keith Housin' Things, A Chorus Line, MC Champions, Bait (etc. I'll chill, they have some of the illest beats ever in my book)
= NAS --- Made You Look, Second Childhood, Ain't Hard To Tell, Nas Is Like, Half Time
= THE LIKS --- Make Room, Next Level, Only When I'm Drunk, Can't Tell Me Shit
= TUFF CREW --- My Part Of Town (one of the illest beats ever), Got To Be Funky, Let It Rip, Feels So Good, Show 'em Hell (these are some Philly cats who made some noise in the underground & beyond; scope itunes, youtube & others spots to hear 'em. From my part of town, nut!)
= KING TEE --- Drunk Technique, Got It Bad Y'all, Bass, On The Rocks
= WC & THE MAAD CIRCLE --- Dress Code, Caught Up, Grandma Locked Out
= ORGANIZED KONFUSION --- Stress (remix w/ Large Professor), Hypnotical Gases, Who Stole The Last Piece Of Chicken? (& remix), that 1st single with OC; what was the name?...
= MANTRONIX --- Get Stupid Fresh pt. I, Bassline, Needle To The Groove

Right on. You know both you and El Machetero made me take notice of Immortal Technique.

See, that's why I say in all genres of music, the best stuff you will most often discover is because of your friend's personal recommendations online or in person, not on the radio, not on the television, and not in the stores.

You right about Talib. His live performance (and that of his backup singers the year I saw him) was FLAWLESS, down to the last detail. I was a happy camper at that show, definitely.

I will look forward to checking out those people mentioned above by you, El Machetero.

Hip Hop this might not be, but I was pleasantly surprised to see on the recent television ads for the recently released X-Files Movie (Yes, I am proudly a HUGE X-Files fan! Yes!).......XZIBIT!!!!!

I didn't know the brother was breaking into the movies! Wow!

Damn son. Threw down the gauntlet! Crazy co-sign on Rae's 'Criminolgy' & 'Glaciers', those put RZA in the pantheon of sonic masters for me & was solidified with Liquid Swords. And that Liks 'Daaaamn!' made me say just that when I heard it. Alkahoiks got the beats that will make ya say DAAAMN!...

More ill sounds:

= WU TANG --- Hell's Wind Staff
= GHOSTFACE ---Daytona 5000, Against The Grain, Apollo Kids (Supreme Clientele was crazy with the beats)
= CANNIBAL OX --- much of the Cold Vein & Vast Aire's Look...I'll name specific jawns later
= JAY-Z & THE ROC --- Change The Game, Stick To The Script (M.O.B.)-- sonicly might be Jay's best album
= FREEWAY & BEANIE SIGEL --- Roc The Mic
= FREEWAY, JAY-Z & BEANIE --- What We Do Seems Wrong
= JAY-Z, DMX & BEANIE --- Money, Cash, Ho's (remix) - the beat Swizz did this was outrageous. I actually bought the 12-inch & I didn't have a turntable at the time.
= AMIL, JAY & BEANIE --- The Dynasty (the drama on this beat is bananas; some 007 stuff. I'll give the Roc has had some crazy beats regardless of the lyrical content).
= CYPRESS HILL --- Hand On The Pump, Killa Hill Niggas (from III w/RZA & U-God), Real Estate, Stoned is..., (etc. the debut record was crazy ill with the sounds).
= ABOVE THE LAW --- V.S.O.P., Pimp Clinic (Black Mafia Life is classic)

If anyone here is thinking about checking the Rock the Bells tour I strongly recommend it. I was able to complete the rest of my life roster of Hip Hop acts I've yet to see. Dead Prez, De La Soul(always wanted to see those dudes live, plus, they came out w/ Dres from Blacksheep and did some of his songs), Pharcyde reunited(they funny catz), Mos Def, Rae and Ghost, Red and Meth(they rip shit the hardest), Nas, A Tribe Called Quest(saw them back in the day but it's cool they reunited).
