Programmers - Should I Teach Myself Python?

Are there any programmers out there?

I'm an amateur computer nerd, I like to screw around and take them apart and put them togethor use a lot of software, but I don't actually program.

Reading a book recently, the author suggested that an amateur could and should teach themselves a programming language, like Python. Do you think it's worth the trouble? I don't have any real goals for the whole thing, I'm just interested in becoming just a little bit more knowledgable. Whattaya think?

Give it a shot. I got out of it when C++ came around and couldn't make heads or tails of it.

Learning Python is a great idea, as you can port programs written in Python to the major OS's(Linux,Windows,Mac OSX). Also, if you are into open source and freeware, there are loads of programs written in Python to work on and improve. Also, Wikibooks has a e-book on programming in Python, which can be found here. Also this place has some good info. Good luck learning! :D

Well, I think I'm going to go whole hog Linux in the upcoming year, so I want to get a little more savvy before I dive in. Anybody a Linux user?

I use Ubuntu and Suse, but not as a programmer. In fact, you don't have to be a programmer to use Linux.

You can try it and see how much its beneficial for you. Just like a trial. If you feel its good then you should get this program. learn english new york

If you want to get into Linux then look into some basic shell scripting even though it is not needed.
JAVA will be a more well round programming language to get a basic understanding of.

Depend how deep you want to get into Linux. If you want to learn some programing learn the basic layout for a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) set up. most websites are made up of this. PHP is a pretty easy language to grab.
